Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Visit strengthens Bhutan-India Energy Partnership

Thimphu, Bhutan – In a demonstration of the enduring friendship and robust bilateral ties between Bhutan and India, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan culminated in a Joint Vision Statement on Bhutan-India Energy Partnership. Prime Minister Modi, alongside his Bhutanese counterpart, Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay, engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at further solidifying the exemplary relationship between the two nations.

During the discussions, both leaders emphasised the remarkable progress made in clean energy partnership, particularly in Bhutan’s hydro-power sector. During his two-day State Visit to the Kingdom, Prime Minister Modi, who arrived yesterday, commended Bhutanese firms for their burgeoning capacity and technical expertise in executing energy projects, while Prime Minister Tobgay lauded India’s leadership in renewable energy initiatives, such as the International Solar Alliance and the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The leaders reviewed ongoing energy projects and expressed satisfaction with their contribution to Bhutan’s economic development. They eagerly anticipated the commissioning of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydro-electric Project, building on the success of the Mangdechhu Hydro-electric Project. Additionally, they welcomed discussions on the technically sound and cost-effective implementation of the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I HEP.

In a significant development, both Prime Ministers agreed on several key points:

– Recognizing the potential of the Bhutan-India energy partnership to enhance energy security, strengthen economies, generate employment, and contribute to industrial and financial capacities.
– Committing to exploring new energy projects and facilitating trade in electricity to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
– Engaging Indian entities as strategic partners in developing new energy projects in hydro-power, solar, and green hydrogen.
– Facilitating financing and market access for Bhutanese power producers, with India’s support.
– Emphasizing the importance of regular consultations to enable investments and seamless cross-border trade in electricity.
– Working towards greater sub-regional energy cooperation for mutual benefit.

Both leaders pledged to expedite projects and initiatives outlined in the Joint Vision Statement, underscoring their commitment to enhancing the Bhutan-India energy partnership for the mutual benefit of both nations. The visit marks another milestone in the enduring friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and India, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
